We had an awesome time on this tour. The day was nice, and the ride quality was excellent. There was a bar on board which I am always up for. It was a great way to cruise around the bay and get a closer look at Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge. The Alcatraz stories we got to hear in the audio guide were sooo amazing! Overall, the Escape from the Rock cruise was more than I expected, and I would definitely recommend it!
The Escape from the Rock cruise was great! The Golden Gate Bridge was one of the most impressive bridges I ever saw and it was one of my favorite parts of the cruise. The boat ride was very comfortable. I had amazing views throughout the trip so I got back with so many photos to share with my family. The audio guide was also very well done, it was incredibly interesting to hear about the escape attempts from Alcatraz.

SAIL AROUND ALCATRAZ
As you arrive, skip the box office line and proceed directly to the gate with your ticket. Your first stop will be Alcatraz prison, also known as “The Rock”. As you circle the island, you’ll see cliffs as high as 50 feet (over 15 meters). With a distance of 1.25 miles offshore (2 kilometers), the island is situated in the middle of San Francisco Bay, frequently met with high winds and fog. Combined with very strong Pacific currents, these factors made the 22.5-acre (9-hectare) island nearly impossible to escape from. Also visible from your cruise are the gardens of Alcatraz. Due to the island’s remoteness and lack of vegetation, guards at Alcatraz started planting a garden to spruce up the place and provide more food for the prison kitchen. Eventually, even inmates were allowed to tend the gardens. The garden continues to be maintained today through a collaboration between the Garden Conservancy, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and the National Park Service.

Did anyone escape Alcatraz?
Over the years, Alcatraz Island saw 14 escape attempts by 36 men, most of which failed. The most famous occurred in 1962 when Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers escaped by digging through their walls and crawling through a tunnel. Their fate remains a mystery. Another notable attempt was the 1946 Battle of Alcatraz, where inmates tried to take over the prison, resulting in a violent shootout with guards and several deaths. There are several movies and TV shows that feature escapes from Alcatraz. The most notable ones are:
- Escape from Alcatraz (1979): a classic movie starring Clint Eastwood, based on the real 1962 escape by Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers.
- The Rock (1996): an action movie with Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage featuring Alcatraz as a setting, though not focused on a real escape.
- Alcatraz (TV Series, 2012): a supernatural drama about prisoners disappearing in 1963 and reappearing in modern-day San Francisco.
