Great tour with incredible views!

I loved the tour of Fisherman Wharf! One of the best parts was walking around and seeing the sea lions up close at Pier 39. The food stalls with crab sandwiches and sourdough bread were delicious, too. I also enjoyed the walking tour where we learned about the Barbary Coast and San Francisco’s history. The views from Alcatraz Island of the bay were stunning. If you’re in San Francisco, the Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz tour is a great way to experience the city!

Historical and scenic San Francisco adventure

The Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz tour was incredible. Our tour guide, James, was fantastic and shared so many fun facts like for example how the Barbary Coast was once filled with saloons, gambling, and pirates in the 1800s. The ferry ride to Alcatraz Island was smooth and gave us beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge. I highly recommend this tour!

VISIT FISHERMAN’S WHARF

After you arrive at the meeting point, you will meet your tour guide. Once the guided tour commences, your first stop will be Aquatic Park, where you’ll enjoy beautiful views of San Francisco Bay. The next stop will be Fisherman’s Wharf, where you'll walk along the famous Embarcadero Promenade and take in all the attractions this iconic neighborhood has to offer. At Pier 39, you might spot sea lions, and along the coast, you’ll encounter historic ships that resemble those that first arrived at these shores. Famous for its food, the waterfront area is home to food stands offering specialties like sourdough bread and crab sandwiches. You’ll also have the chance to visit the Musée Mécanique, an interactive museum with a large collection of 20th-century penny arcade games and artifacts. Your guide will share insights into the significance and history of these locations.

LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF FISHERMAN’S WHARF

In the late 19th century, the first Fisherman’s Wharf was built, and at the beginning of the 20th century, the state of California permitted commercial fishing in the area. Over the years, this northern waterfront of San Francisco became home to many generations of fishermen, and the area developed its unique culture. Some restaurants in Fisherman’s Wharf have been owned by the same family for generations.

EXPLORE ALCATRAZ AT YOUR LEISURE

After your tour of Fisherman’s Wharf, your guide will escort you to the ferry ride to Alcatraz Island. From there, you will receive an audio guide and have the opportunity to explore the infamous Alcatraz prison at your leisure. Learn about the history of Alcatraz and how it became the world’s most secure prison of its time. With frequent inmate checks, strict rules, and the prison’s location on an island surrounded by cold, turbulent waters, this prison truly lived up to its reputation. Initially, Alcatraz held its first military prisoners as early as 1861 during the Civil War, though it only officially became the U.S. Military Prison, Pacific Branch, in 1907. In 1934, it was re-fortified and became a maximum-security prison. While exploring, you’ll find the cells of famous criminals like Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. Over the years, there were 14 escape attempts, but none are officially confirmed to have been successful. You can also explore the gardens surrounding the prison and enjoy beautiful views of the San Francisco skyline across the bay.

OPTIONAL FERRIS WHEEL RIDE

After concluding your Alcatraz tour, if you choose this option, you’ll head over to the SkyStar Ferris Wheel at Pier 43 and enjoy panoramic views of San Francisco from a unique perspective!

Interesting facts about Fisherman's Wharf

THE CREATION OF FISHERMAN’S WHARF FROM 1906'S ASHES

The present-day Fisherman’s Wharf stands on ground formed from the debris of structures that were demolished during the earthquake and fire of 1906!

THE EVOLUTION OF CRABBING IN SAN FRANCISCO

Centuries ago, many crabs were found close to shore in the San Francisco Bay area. As time passed, the bay's clams, which are a primary food source for crabs, disappeared from the bay. Because of this, people who catch crabs now have to go much farther out into the ocean, near some islands called the Farallon Islands, to find crabs. Despite this extra effort, the crabs they catch are still really tasty and are a popular food to try when visiting the Wharf area in San Francisco.
