EXPLORE THE ALCATRAZ ISLAND
On the first day of your 2-day tour, you will visit Alcatraz Island. Cross the bay by ferry before arriving at the island. Once there, you can listen to your audio guide as you explore both the island and the infamous prison. Learn about the inmates' lives and the harsh conditions they faced. Hear about daring escape attempts and discover why Alcatraz had the reputation of being the world's most secure prison. Visit the cells of notorious criminals such as Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz. Before it became a prison, Alcatraz was a military base, and in 1934 was modernized and converted into a maximum-security prison. The rules were very strict, and guards frequently checked inmates to ensure they were in their cells. Strategically placed watch towers always monitored the area to prevent escapes. Even if an inmate managed to get past all of this, they would have to contend with the cold Pacific waters and strong currents, making escape nearly impossible without drowning.
ENJOY YOUR BIKE TOUR ON THE SAN FRANCISCO WATERFRONT
On your second day, join your tour guide and receive your biking equipment, including a modern bike with plenty of space for your belongings and a helmet. Ride along the San Francisco waterfront, starting at the famous Fisherman’s Wharf. Here, you'll notice a variety of attractions, from wildlife like sea lions to food stands and historic restaurants. You’ll also encounter historic ships in the bay. Your guide will share the history of this iconic neighborhood, which has housed active fishermen since the late 19th century - a culture still preserved today.
PEDAL ACROSS THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
Next, continue along the waterfront and pass by former army bases like Fort Mason, the Presidio, and Fort Point. As you cross the Golden Gate Bridge, be sure to snap a photo of one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks! Your official bike tour will conclude in the charming town of Sausalito, which boasts a Mediterranean flair and a beautiful waterfront. After the tour, you may return to San Francisco immediately or keep the bike until closing hours and continue exploring the bay area at your leisure.

Facts about Alcatraz you probably didn't know
AL CAPONE WAS ALLOWED TO PLAY BANJO IN ALCATRAZ
The infamous inmate Al Capone was allowed to play the banjo in an inmate band. After being transferred to Alcatraz, Al Capone was not able to receive the preferential treatment he had in other prisons. However, he earned the privilege to play the banjo every Saturday for the other inmates due to his good behavior.
THE REAL REASON CRIMINALS WENT TO ALCATRAZ
The worst criminals in the country were not automatically sent to Alcatraz. It wasn’t necessarily the severity of their crime that determined whether they would be sent to Alcatraz, but rather how difficult they were to manage in other prisons. Inmates who frequently bribed guards or caused significant trouble were among the first to be transferred to Alcatraz, due to the prison’s strict nature.
